The Government of Karnataka, through its Labour Department (Order No. 466, dated 12/11/2025), has issued a landmark notification aimed at promoting the health, well-being, and efficiency of women employees working across industries and establishments in the state.
As per the order, all industries and establishments registered under the Factories Act, 1948; Karnataka Shops and Commercial Establishments Act, 1961; Plantation Labour Act, 1951; Beedi and Cigar Workers Act, 1966; and Motor Transport Workers Act, 1961, are directed to provide one day of paid “Menstrual Leave” per month to all female employees aged between 18 and 52 years, including permanent, contractual, and outsourced workers.
Key Provisions of the Order:
- Each woman employee is entitled to one day of paid Menstrual Leave per month (total 12 days per year).
- The leave must be availed within the same month — it cannot be carried forward.
- No medical certificate is required to avail the leave.
This progressive step by the Karnataka Government aims to create a more inclusive and supportive work environment for women, acknowledging their health needs and promoting workplace equality.
